Is the Seoul Climate Card Worth It in 2026? My Honest Math for Travelers

Seoul is truly one of the cities with the most convenient transportation systems. I commute to work using the Climate Card debit. Thanks to a youth discount, I pay about 60,000 won a month to use the subway, buses, and even Ttareungi (Seoul’s shared bicycles) unlimitedly. I heard that foreigners can also use this cost-effective system. So today, I’d like to introduce the Seoul Climate Card and share some great tips.

About the Seoul Climate Card

As mentioned earlier, the Seoul Climate Card is a card that allows you to use public transportation (buses, subways, and Ttareungi) unlimitedly for a fixed fee. If you are traveling to Seoul, you will likely be visiting everything from major tourist attractions to hidden gems like restaurants and cafes; just imagine how much your transportation costs would be if you simply used a standard transportation card. This is exactly the kind of card you need to save money on these expenses. This is exactly the kind of card you need to save money on. Check out the “Best Seoul Night Route: Jongno Dakgalbi and Deoksugung Palace Walk” a course connecting Jongno to City Hall using the Climate Card.

Differences from the T-money Card

If you have already purchased and recharged a T-money card at a convenience store or subway station, you can continue using it without any issues. However, the T-money card has two major restrictions.

  • You know that you must tap your card when transferring from the subway to a bus, or from a bus back to the subway, right? In this case, T-money cards have a limit of three transfers. After three transfers, the basic fare is charged again.
  • If you do not use public transportation within 30 minutes (or within one hour in the evening) after using T-money, the transfer system resets.

Reasons to Recommend the Seoul Climate Card

The two restrictions mentioned earlier do not apply to the Climate Card. Since you can use it unlimitedly with just a one-time fixed fare, you can use public transportation comfortably without any time constraints. I think this is the best way to avoid stress.

Here is a Tip

Please note that the Climate Companion Card does not work when you take the subway from Incheon Airport after arriving at the airport! However, you can use the Climate Companion Card when traveling from Seoul to Incheon Airport, so you can use it comfortably.

Seoul Climate Card Fares and Types

Initially, it was a system designed for citizens living in Seoul like myself, but now its scope has expanded so that foreigners traveling to Seoul can also use it. The pass types include a 1-day pass (5,000 KRW), a 2-day pass (8,000 KRW), a 3-day pass (10,000 KRW), a 5-day pass (15,000 KRW), and a 7-day pass (20,000 KRW).

Since most people plan to stay for about a week when traveling to Seoul, purchasing a 5-day or 7-day pass should be sufficient to explore the city before you leave. If you want to explore from Seoul Forest to the trendy Seongsu Station, just like in my post "Seoul International Garden Show 2026: Why You Must Visit Seongsu Now" the Climate Companion Card will definitely be necessary.

Purchasing the Climate Card

You can purchase it at customer service centers or kiosks inside subway stations (Lines 1-9), or at convenience stores near major tourist attractions. To write this review, I tried purchasing a Climate Card at a subway kiosk just like a foreigner did. I was able to buy the physical pass card for 3,000 KRW.

Here is a tip

There was a foreign couple in front of me who just bought the card and left. Then, a short while later, they came back to recharge it and went back to take the subway. You should not just buy the card! As the name suggests, purchasing the card means buying the physical card; you must recharge it at a kiosk. Please keep this in mind. You can top up according to the types I mentioned earlier and your specific situation. Once the top-up is complete, you can now ride public transportation unlimitedly. Simply tap your card against the sensor at the subway turnstile, and you will hear a beep confirming that the payment has been processed.

Here is Tip 2

Starting March 17, 2026, the use of overseas credit cards for topping up the Seoul Climate Card has been updated. I recently saw a large number of kiosks being replaced at subway stations, so it seems this update was made to address that. You can select the Climate Card you wish to purchase at a kiosk like the one pictured, and then proceed with payment and top-up using an overseas credit card.

You can find more detailed information on the official Seoul website.

Today, I wrote a post about the Seoul Climate Card. I have used public transportation abroad myself, but I don’t think there is a card with as good value for money as this one. Seoul is the best city where you can get anywhere quickly without even needing to take a taxi. Like me, purchase a Climate Card and enjoy your trip without the stress of transportation costs.
